Critiques

A professional critique without any line edits or markings on your actual manuscript. This will be a letter from me with notes on the story, what I liked, what I feel can use some work, some light suggestions. A critique may lead you to hire me for Content Editing & Development or Sensitivity Reading.

Before you hire me for this type of work, I will need the following information:

  • Length of the manuscript (from short story to novel)
  • Genre
  • Short form and full length blurb
  • Submission readiness of manuscript (Is this an unpolished rough draft? First draft? Have you had other content developers or sensitivity readers work on this?)

I reserve the right to pass on any project which I feel would not benefit with me as a reader.

Content & Developmental Editing

Before you hire me for this type of work, I recommend reading “10 Things Your Freelance Editor Might Not Tell You–But Should“. My main focus is on character agency and consistency, poking at plot holes, and tightening the pace of a story.

This type of work includes:

  • Tracked changes and edits in the manuscript
  • Specific feedback and constructive criticism
  • Dialogue and narrative voice suggestions and consistency tracking
  • Line edits for pacing, such as moving, removing, or adding scenes, narration, or dialogue
  • Honing and focusing of the major and minor plots and premise, or character arcs
  • Editorial revisions communicated in a clear, professional manner
  • May include a letter from me detailing major feedback

If you are looking for spelling and grammar edits, you are looking for a copy-editor. I am not available for this work.

Sensitivity Reading

Sensitivity Reading is recommended after Content & Development has been finalized either by me or another editor.

“A sensitivity reader is a professional you hire who’s job is to read your manuscript with special emphasis on how you portray people from marginalized groups or key historical events that involved those groups.”John Berkowitz

“Manuscripts should be free of glaring errors and should be nearly submission ready, meaning it should be a later draft and something that has been reviewed by others.” – Writing in the Margins

I’m available for any size project from short stories to large novels. All of my readings will be through the eyes of my own life experience and continued sensitivity learning. Please be prepared for the possibility that you will need to make major changes to your plot, characters, world, or continuity.

Disclaimers & Reminders

I am not a critique partner or a rough first draft beta reader. I am not interested in or willing to do manuscript trades. This is work which I put in many long hours to provide. I reserve the right to pass on any potential project for any reason (this might be because of the content needing someone other than me to sensitivity read; I might be swamped; I might not be interested in your genre). I reserve the right to pass without informing you why I need to.

Payment for services over $100 must be paid 50% upfront before I begin work, with the remaining 50% paid halfway through the project. My preferred payment methods are through PayPal and Venmo. My work for you is not an endorsement. My opinion is only one person’s. In some cases, I may recommend you find a second sensitivity reader for areas which are not mine to speak on. In general, I recommend having more than one sensitivity reader to begin with. Please remember not to ask people of color and other marginalized voices to work for free.
